The latest overflight data from the Rock Canyon Fire in northern Coconino County showed the fire had grown to about 4,500 acres by Thursday morning, June 18.
The fire, believed to have started from a lightning strike, was first reported on Monday afternoon and has grown significantly since then, fueled by strong winds and dry conditions. The origin point was approximately 18 miles east of Fredonia. By Thursday morning, the fire’s eastern tip was abutting House Rock Valley Road, another seven miles east.
