Community group hopes to save bikes from Flagstaff landfill

Community Assistance Teams of Flagstaff (CATS), the local nonprofit organization providing support and services to the unsheltered population, hopes to tap a new source of materials this year for its bike program: the landfill.

The CATS on Wheels program — which absorbed the Lefty Loosey bike cooperative in late 2024 — provides low-cost or no-cost bicycles to community members. John Buckley, who oversees that program, presented the idea of reclaiming discarded bikes from the Cinder Lake Landfill at a meeting of the city’s Commission on Inclusion and Adaptive Living on April 22.
