Flagstaff softball 11s suffer heartbreaker in district championship

The ashes of a distant wildfire began to fall right as things took a turn for the worst for the Flagstaff Girls Softball Little League All-Star 11s team.

After taking a 12-8 lead into the bottom of the sixth, Winslow scored five runs, all with two outs, to win in walk-off fashion, 13-12, in the Arizona State District 1 11s championship round on Thursday at Continental Park. Winslow was down to its last strike on multiple occasions, but a handful of errors, heads-up baserunning and solid contact when it was needed most turned the falling ashes into tears for a Flagstaff team poised to keep playing into the night.
