In a heart-wrenching turn of events, more than 200 animals were rescued from what can only be described as horrific conditions in Thurston County. The Thurston County Sheriff’s Office, alongside rescue groups, discovered a shocking number of animals—including four dogs, 195 birds, 33 pigs, and a bull—living in dire circumstances coupled with neglect. It’s hard to imagine how anyone could treat animals this way, but that’s just what happened here.
Heartwood Haven took on the heavy lifting, welcoming 67 of the rescued animals into their sanctuary, giving them food, water, and a fighting chance of recovery. Just picture the relief those poor pigs must feel to finally have access to water—like finding an oasis in the desert! Kate Tsyrklevich, the executive director of Heartwood Haven, described the living conditions as “truly horrific,” proving that this is no ordinary rescue story.
With first-degree animal cruelty being a felony, the question looms: will the owner face justice for this shocking neglect? While there’s no clear answer just yet, it’s a stark reminder of why we need to advocate for animal welfare. The positive side? These animals are safe now and living their best lives—at least, they will be once they’ve fully settled into their new cozy beds of hay. What’s the most you’ve ever done to help an animal in need?
