The crime scene in Washington, D.C. just got a major overhaul, thanks to President Trump’s recent crack at law enforcement. With a grand total of nearly 2,000 officers deployed, one might expect a flurry of heroic crime-fighting action. But hold your applause—over ten days, the operation mustered only about 380 arrests! Yes, you read that right. With a number that low, it’s starting to feel like the world’s slowest game of whack-a-mole.
The majority of these arrests unearthed some not-so-heinous offenses, including possession charges that make one wonder if we’re battling crime or just collecting paperwork. As Rep. Thomas Massie cheekily pointed out, “carrying a pistol without a license isn’t a crime, it’s a constitutionally protected right.” So, while the officers were busy saving the day, it seems their targets might have just needed a bit more identification on hand—talk about an underwhelming crime-busting adventure!
The deployment also raises eyebrows about the training of these federal agents and National Guard troops, who, according to the ACLU, should not be handling local policing duties. So what’s the endgame here? With mixed results and a questionable approach to tackling crime, one has to wonder if a different strategy might just be more effective. If you were in charge, what would your first move be with nearly 2,000 officers at your disposal?
