It’s Election Day in Seattle, and while everyone is encouraged to get their ballots in by 8 p.m., it seems like a lot of residents are hitting the snooze button. As of 8 a.m., fewer than 19 percent of registered voters in King County had returned their ballots. Talk about a turnout flop! Maybe folks are busy preparing for the possibility of rain, or perhaps they’re taking election advice from their couch. At this rate, we might need to start a “Voting is Sexy” campaign to get people motivated!
While Seattle deals with sluggish voter turnout, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is stoking the political flames by threatening to track down and tell on Democratic lawmakers who’ve left the state to protest a redistricting effort. Add to that the smoky skies from the Bear Gulch fire, and Seattle is feeling the pressure of low rainfall and higher stakes. Really, who needs reality TV when you can just watch the drama unfold on the political stage?
But let’s not forget that while Abbott is busy playing a game of cat and mouse, Seattleites are hoping for just a drop of rain to clear the air. Six and a half inches below normal rainfall since January makes it feel a little more like a desert than the Pacific Northwest we know and love. What could be more fitting for Election Day? So, what do you think? Is it time to shake things up and encourage some serious voter commitment? Would you venture out in the rain to make your voice heard?
