Tomorrow’s the day! With Primary Election Day upon us, Seattle voters need to have their ballots in by 8 p.m. If procrastination is your sport, don’t forget to sign that envelope! So far, about one in ten ballots are running into signature snafus, which is definitely not the type of drama we want to add to an already tumultuous election season.
But it’s not all about the voting; the past week has seen Seattle grappling with serious public safety issues. Just days after the tragic shooting deaths of three individuals, Police Chief Shon Barnes made not-so-rosy headlines acknowledging the uptick in gun violence. So, while you’re casting your vote, you might want to ponder how these issues impact our city.
And sports fans—it’s a wild time for ICE agents, who are now enjoying new student loan forgiveness programs as well as hefty bonuses. Meanwhile, Tacoma is courting controversy with a $6 million settlement related to the police custody of Manuel Ellis, raising eyebrows and serious questions about law enforcement accountability. Honestly, at what point do we as a society decide that enough is enough?
These topics are a mix of heavy and hopeful, and they’ll no doubt spark plenty of conversations at the water cooler. What do you think about the balance of public safety, civil rights, and electoral engagement? Let’s hear your thoughts!
