If you ever thought fight clubs were just a movie gimmick, think again! This past Sunday, chaos erupted at an illegal fight club event in Shirley, Long Island, where things quickly escalated from brawls to bullets—sort of. When police arrived after reports of gunfire, they found several participants in a scuffle, and surprise, surprise, things didn’t end well for everyone involved. Two teens found themselves at the hospital with injuries after a participant decided to discharge a blank-firing gun. Not exactly the fun night they’d planned, huh?
Thirteen individuals were arrested, including a 25-year-old named Devine Brown, who now has a whole list of charges that sound like a bad episode of Criminal Minds. As local authorities like Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico get fed up with this kind of mindless chaos, they’re calling for stricter laws to put the kibosh on these underground shindigs. It seems like this is the universe’s way of saying that if you’re going to throw down, maybe stick to the gym or, at the very least, lose the guns—blank-firing or otherwise!
What’s really behind the allure of these fight clubs and why do people keep getting involved? Is it the thrill, the rebel spirit, or just a lack of suitable hobbies? Word to the wise: there are tons of constructive (and safer) ways to unleash pent-up energy that don’t involve risking life and limb. How about starting a book club instead? I promise you, they don’t hit each other over chapter critiques!
