The recent tragic flooding in Texas has sent shockwaves far beyond the Lone Star State, prompting King County officials to take a good hard look at their own flood preparedness. With over 100 lives lost and many more impacted, King County Flood Control District Board Chair Reagan Dunn chimed in with a cautionary tale, recounting the damaging floods of yesteryear in Kent Valley. I mean, who wouldn’t want to avoid having their town swim everywhere, right?
Dunn introduced a motion—passionate and unanimous, mind you—aiming to boost early alert systems and develop a flood preparedness video. They’re even going to roll out materials in several languages because nothing says “community” like being able to prepare together, no matter your dominant language. Plus, these measures include expanding their “Be Flood Ready” brochure and ramping up outreach via community navigators. A proactive approach is a smart move; we all know it’s better to be ready than to regret being stuck up a creek without a paddle.
As we wait for our leaders to roll out these important initiatives, it’s a great moment to ask ourselves: what would we do if we were caught unprepared? And how can we all work together to make sure our neighborhoods are ready for whatever Mother Nature throws our way? You might even consider sharing your own flood prep tips in the comments!
