When it comes to serving up kindness, Korea House Restaurant in Austin is hitting all the right notes. Known as the first authentic Korean BBQ spot in the city, this heartwarming eatery is on a mission to change lives—one free meal at a time. They recently celebrated a significant milestone: surpassing 15,000 free meals served to those who walk through their doors. And they’ve been doing this every first Wednesday of the month since who-knows-when! Talk about putting your money where your heart is.
Owners Vivian Newton and Pok-Cha Kim aren’t just dishing out food; they’re spreading love straight from the kitchen. Despite facing financial challenges, these two believe that sharing helps fill their own cups just as much as it fills the empty bellies of their patrons. They say it best: “If we have to close down, we’ll close down. But until then, we’re just going to keep on going.” Now that’s what I call commitment.
This initiative not only attracts those in need, but local students are also lining up for a taste of nostalgia and good old-fashioned Korean comfort food. Moses Yoo, a satisfied diner and unhoused Korean American, shared how the smells and flavors transported him back to Korea. Who wouldn’t want to enjoy a meal that’s as much a feast for the soul as it is for the stomach? It’s a culinary time machine of sorts!
So, what do you think about restaurants taking such steps to give back? Should more eateries follow Korea House’s lead? It’s definitely food for thought—pun intended!
