After putting together a dominant seven-run win in the schools’ first meeting earlier in the week, the No. 12 Coconino Panthers (7-4, 4-2 4A Grand Canyon) edged out No. 14 Mohave Thunderbirds (4-5, 2-5 4A Grand Canyon) 4-1 on Thursday in Bullhead City.
The Thunderbirds took a 1-0 lead in the first inning before the Panthers evened the score in the second as senior Katelynn Yazzie scored on a single by junior Savannah Waters. Coconino finally broke the tie in the sixth inning with three runs to earn its second straight victory and a season sweep of Mohave. Senior Cassidey Castillo opened the inning with a single and came home one batter later as sophomore Emma Kennelly sent a 1-0 pitch over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run.
