Imagine stumbling upon $2.5 billion just sitting there, waiting for someone to claim it. That’s the situation the Washington Department of Revenue finds itself in, as it’s currently searching for the rightful owners of unclaimed cash and property. This treasure trove mostly springs from unclaimed stock dividends, rebate checks, and dormant funds in closed bank accounts. In short, it’s like money just waiting for a good home—but you don’t have to adopt it; you can simply reclaim it!
The Department has its own team of “locators” who are on the prowl for residents with a significant amount of unclaimed treasure. And in a wild twist, one of them came across a pirate treasure from a 1700s shipwreck off the coast of Spain! Talk about a conversation starter at your next yard sale. Imagine your aunt’s reaction when you tell her you found a piece of history along with her forgotten rebate check!
If you’ve moved recently, it might be time to check if Uncle Sam has a little something extra for you in his treasure chest. The good news is that these funds don’t expire, so there’s no rush—unless you want to get your hands on some of that pirate booty. Have you ever checked for unclaimed property? If so, what did you find? Let’s hear your stories!
