In what feels like a plot twist from a bad movie, measles cases in the U.S. are soaring to levels we thought were in the rearview mirror. With over 1,300 cases reported this year, it’s the highest since 2000, when measles was declared eliminated. Health experts, including the watchful Doctor Paul Pottinger, caution that traveling can turn you into a walking target for this virus. If you think your vaccination status will keep you safe, think again—this bug is like that uninvited party guest who stays far too long, lingering even in the air for up to two hours!
The alarming rise in measles cases is primarily due to a drop in vaccinations, but we still have that powerful weapon in our arsenal: the measles vaccine. One dose offers around 93% protection, while two doses shoot that up to a staggering 97%. If only there were a vaccine to make people remember their shots! And for parents of little ones not old enough for the jab, a bit of travel planning might be in order—nobody wants a vacation interrupted by a bout of measles instead of relaxation.
With so many people hitting the road this time of year, what’s your take on vaccinations? Are you feeling secure about your status, or do you think it’s time for a health check? Drop your thoughts in the comments and joining the conversation around this hot topic!
