Exciting news for dog lovers! Sound Transit has officially decided that leashed dogs will be allowed on light rail trains starting in 2026. After years of sticking to the “pet-in-a-crate” rule, the unanimous vote by the Sound Transit Board reflects a shift in the region’s attitude toward pets in public spaces. Inspired by the opening of the Marymoor Village Station, which is conveniently located near a sprawling 40-acre off-leash dog park, it seems that public transit is finally catching up with our furry friends!
Not only will this change let your pooch ride free with you, but it’s also set to align Seattle with other pet-friendly locales. In contrast, King County Metro allows dogs on buses but charges a fare for larger dogs! One can only imagine the bliss of commuting alongside your doggo instead of cramming into a crowded train next to someone’s lunch leftovers. So, dig out those leashes, folks – the train ride of the future is about to get better (and furrier)!
And it doesn’t stop there! There’s also been chatter about allowing other leashed pets, like cats, to join the party. What’s next? Hamsters on the Metro? It’s shaping up to be a wild pet parade on public transport, but what do you think? Should other animals ride the train too, or is it strictly a dog-and-cat affair? Let’s hear your thoughts!
