In a twist worthy of a reality show, the Seattle Kraken mascot Buoy found himself in some hot water (or should we say, cold water?) after a fishing trip ended with an unexpected visit from a bear. While having a close encounter with this wild creature, Buoy was busy dropping lines that got PETA’s attention. The animal rights organization swiftly sent a letter to Kraken CEO Tod Leiweke, urging the team to put down the fishing poles, emphasizing that fish can feel pain and fear just like any other living creature.
PETA’s founder Ingrid Newkirk made a case for kinder habits in sports, gently reminding us that fishing may not align with the team’s previous social media messaging about respecting wildlife. They cleverly suggested Buoy might want to fish for litter instead of fish. Who knew fishing trips could lead to debates over ethics, wildlife respect, and, oh yeah, bears? It’s almost like an episode of “When Wild Mascots Attack.”
While Buoy escaped unscathed from his bear encounter, the mascot’s trip raises an interesting question: should sports teams rethink their engagement with nature during community outings? After all, who wants their mascot playing a game of catch with wildlife? It’s enough to make you ponder what’s next—a deep-sea diving trip where the Kraken meets an octopus? Bring on the critters and the conversations!
