The City of SeaTac has made a surprising move this year—it’s canceled its annual Fourth of July fireworks show due to safety concerns. That’s right, folks! The city council decided that with over 10,000 attendees last year in a park meant for just 3,200, a sparkler-induced disaster was just around the corner if something didn’t change. Who knew trying to keep the viewing public safe would lead to such a bang-less celebration?
This isn’t just a random decision, either. Communications Director David Inman highlighted that last year’s event had only 10 police officers on hand to manage the chaos. And if you thought last year’s drone fiasco—when 55 drones decided to take an unexpected swim—was responsible for the decision, think again! The city assures us that safety is the top priority now, with plans promising future celebrations will be reimagined to be more inclusive. So, no pressure there, right?
Meanwhile, Angle Lake Park will still welcome daytime visitors this July Fourth for some summer fun, just not under a sky lit up by fireworks. So how will SeaTac residents celebrate this year? With no fireworks to light up the night sky, maybe it’s time to dust off those picnic baskets and enjoy a good old-fashioned barbecue instead. Think about it—what could be more American than hot dogs and safety?
As we ponder what this new direction means for future celebrations, here’s a thought: if you were in charge of planning next year’s festivities, what twist would you add to make it unforgettable?
