Summer is synonymous with beach trips and seafood feasts, but in western Washington, it seems the only thing on the menu now is caution. Recreational shellfish harvesting has been officially closed due to the discovery of paralytic shellfish poison, stretching from Alki Beach to Dash Point State Park and across eastern Vashon-Maury Island. So, if you were planning to dig into some fresh clams, better rethink those dinner reservations!
This nasty little biotoxin wreaks havoc on the nervous system, and although it may not look any different from your typical harvest, those shellfish could come with a side of paralysis—definitely not the kind of appetizer you want! Symptoms can start harmlessly with some tingling around the lips and, before you know it, escalate to breathing difficulties. Talk about a dramatic seafood experience!
Health officials recommend staying away from shellfish until the waters are clear. If you start feeling even the slightest hint of those tingly sensations, you’d better contact a healthcare provider, pronto. And hey, if clam chowder isn’t safe, there’s always store-bought shrimp to tide you over—unless you fancy a kitchen adventure with something riskier, like mystery meat!
