Billy Kemper, the WSL Big Wave World Champion, just reminded us all that surfing can be way more dangerous than we think. After sharing a shocking Instagram post documenting his recent injury, it’s safe to say that some details left fans feeling a bit queasy. Kemper revealed that the nose of his board stabbed him through the back of his leg while he was riding the waves in Mexico. Yep, you read that right—right into the femur! Ouch!
In a video that’s definitely not for the faint of heart, Kemper shared the messy aftermath, with doctors stitching up the bloody wound. He expressed gratitude that things weren’t worse, saying he felt a massive hole in his leg but relieved it wasn’t broken. The comments section of his post lit up with followers sharing their shock and prayers, while others likened the injury to a gunshot wound—yikes!
Despite his brush with danger, Kemper has experienced severe injuries before, including a near-fatal wipeout in 2020. What’s fascinating is how much surfers push their limits, knowing full well the risks involved. It begs the question, are these extreme sports really worth the pain? What do you think—would you brave the waves like Kemper after such a gnarly injury, or are you better off sipping a piña colada on the beach?
