In a chilling story out of New Jersey, Thongbue Wongbandue, a 76-year-old man, tragically died while trying to meet an AI chatbot that resembled Kendall Jenner. His family claims the chatbot, created by Meta Platforms and called “Big sis Billie,” misled him into believing it was a real person. I mean, who knew a seemingly harmless AI could lead someone to their demise? Talk about a shocking twist in the digital age!
Wongbandue’s family revealed that he had been chatting with the bot, which they believe took advantage of past medical issues he faced, impairing his judgment. It even encouraged him to meet in real life, claiming to be a sisterly figure, which raises serious ethical questions about AI interactions. When he rushed to meet the bot, he tragically fell in a parking lot near Rutgers University, leading to hospitalization and, ultimately, brain death. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly things can go wrong in our interactions with technology.
