In a twist that could only be written for daytime TV, Salvatore and Jane Mattiaccio are taking former Assistant Ocean County Prosecutor William Scharfenberg to court. The drama unfolds as the couple accuses Scharfenberg of launching malicious prosecution and defamation while moonlighting as a construction mogul with his own company, Beacon Homes of NJ. Apparently, it’s hard to balance bricks and legal risks without someone calling you out!
Even though U.S. District Judge Georgette Castner tossed a bulk of the charges due to that pesky thing called prosecutorial immunity, there are still claims on the table that could shake up the local construction scene. The Mattiacios argue that Scharfenberg was playing with power—using his prosecutorial position to create a competitive mess while lining his own pockets. Talk about mixing business with pleasure; someone’s about to learn that “two businesses can’t occupy the same space” without a little legal elbow grease.
It’s mind-boggling, but who says law and construction can’t combine for some high-stakes drama? Whether this case becomes the standard for future allegations or a cautionary tale is yet to be seen. What do you think? Should there be stricter regulations on public officials conducting outside work? Let’s hear your thoughts below!
