Imagine taking a lovely family hike in Olympic National Park, enjoying nature’s beauty, and then—surprise! A cougar decides to make a cameo. That’s exactly what happened to a four-year-old and their family while strolling near the Victoria Overlook on Hurricane Ridge. Talk about an unexpected wildlife encounter that no one prepared for!
The little one was bitten by a collared mountain lion, and after a frantic call for help, park staff rushed in to assist. The child was airlifted to a Level 1 trauma center, and thankfully, they’re now in satisfactory condition. But let’s not overlook the fact that the rangers quickly tracked down the cougar, which sounds like something straight out of a wildlife thriller. Imagine the evening headlines: “Cougar at Large—Park Rangers on the Hunt!”
It’s a sobering reminder that while nature can be enchanting, it also has a wild side. As families head out to enjoy the great outdoors, let’s remember to keep an eye out—even when we’re having fun! Have you had a close encounter with wildlife that turned your hike into an adventure? We’d love to hear your stories!
