In an incident that could practically be a scene from an action movie, Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders found himself in a showdown during a DUI arrest. The trouble started when he noticed a driver in a utility truck barreling down the road without taillights. After refusing to pull over and speeding off, the suspect led Sanders on a wild chase only to land right in his own driveway. Talk about going from zero to sixty in record time!
As the sheriff approached, the suspect threw a drink in his face, throwing the classic “we’re on private property!” defense out there like it’s a get-out-of-jail-free card. Shocked but not deterred, Sanders found himself in an unexpected tussle where he even got his radio disabled after the suspect grabbed at his vest. Is this what they meant by “hands-on” policing?
Backup arrived just in time, including a courageous K-9 named Asher who made like a dog superhero and helped bring the situation under control. The suspect ultimately went down, but not without some resistance. In an ironic twist, while this was all going down, family members had offered to drive him home earlier in the night— talk about poor choices! What do you think: Is resisting arrest ever a good idea?
And here’s a wild thought: instead of drinks flying, perhaps the next time we see a cop pull someone over, they can just offer them a ride home instead. Wouldn’t that be a better use of our law enforcement resources?
