Ever hear something so loud it makes you second guess whether a concert is happening in your backyard? Bellevue residents recently had that experience when Boeing MH-47G Chinook helicopters soared overhead. These heavy-lifters, part of the Army’s special operations training at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, caught folks off guard as they navigated the skies in formation. I mean, who wouldn’t jump when you feel the trees shaking from a chopper’s rotors?
Gary Dangerfield, the external communications chief for JBLM, confirmed that the helicopters flying low weren’t part of some top-secret mission but rather scheduled training exercises. He emphasized that these activities were designed to minimize disturbances for residents—easy to say when your house isn’t shaking! Dangerfield also explained that flying close to the ground helps pilots sharpen their skills for low-light conditions, albeit at the expense of your dinner conversation.
But at least we can be impressed—these Chinooks aren’t your average helicopters. With maximum weight capacities of 54,000 pounds and an impressive wingspan, they definitely bring the wow factor. Just imagine watching a trio of them flying in a ‘v’-formation over your head while you’re trying to enjoy your evening. Talk about a surprise entertainment upgrade!
What would you do if a military helicopter buzzed over your house? Would you panic, grab your phone for a video, or just shake your head and return to your pizza? Share your thoughts!
