The new Diverging Diamond Interchange at I-90 and State Route 18 in Snoqualmie opened recently, and it’s already giving drivers a run for their money. Although it promised to ease congestion on those notorious Sunday drives, it seems that backup is still the name of the game. Brian Nielson from the Washington Department of Transportation warned that we may have to endure these delays until the widening construction is completed this fall. So, yes, hang on to your snacks; it’s going to be a bumpy ride!
What makes this interchange unique is that when you exit on to westbound SR 18, you’re literally switching to the left lane. So if navigating rush hour traffic isn’t stressful enough, now you can add a little weirdness to the mix! While we wait for the WSDOT to finish up, Washington State Patrol Lieutenant Pete Cozzitorto promises it’ll eventually reduce congestion and enhance safety—and maybe even give us a few less reasons to lay on that horn.
So what does that all mean? If you’re driving through the new DDI, expect a bit of a learning curve. It’s almost like learning to drive all over again, but thankfully, it shouldn’t be anything that a couple of practice runs can’t fix. Have any hilarious or frustrating experiences navigating the new layout? Let’s hear them in the comments!
