In a turn of events that’s either alarming or just another Tuesday in our world, a left-wing activist named Jeremy Lawson was arrested after allegedly assaulting journalist Cam Higby at an anti-ICE protest in Seattle. Yes, you heard that right—filming protests has apparently become a contact sport. Higby was left nursing a concussion and head trauma despite wearing tactical gear. One might think a helmet is enough for safety, but clearly, if you’re filming the crowd, you might need an extra layer of bubble wrap!
Lawson, who claims to be a left-wing activist but not affiliated with Antifa, stated he’s on a mission to advocate for the working poor and promote equality. Gotta love the passion! However, it begs the question, are there limits to activism? Higby insists he was targeted for documenting what he describes as illegal activities among the protestors. If you can’t handle the heat of the spotlight, should you really be in the kitchen—or in this case, the protest?
Facing felony assault charges with bail set at $75,000, Lawson’s situation has escalated quickly. This whole incident makes you wonder: how do we strike a balance between activism and the rights of those documenting it? Really, is this what it’s come to—a scuffle over social justice? It’d be interesting to hear thoughts on how activism should and shouldn’t be conducted in today’s society.
What do you think? Is filming protests a right that some want to crush? Comment below!
