Last week, anyone who wasn’t sleeping under a rock knew that the Cocodona 250 race was in town and how Dr. Rachel Entrekin made international news by setting the overall course record in an unbelievable 56 hours, nine minutes and 48 seconds. Hats off to her, to all of the participants and to the hundreds of volunteers who made it such a memorable event — including one unsung local runner who made the end of the race a little bit more fun. This story is mainly about him.
To help cheer on the back of the packers as they tried to beat the 125-hour “cutoff” finish time, I scheduled our Northern Arizona Trail Runners Association’s (NATRA) Saturday group outing to coincide with Cocodona’s “Golden Hour,” aka the last hour of the race.
