The clock nears 2 p.m. and practice doesn’t start for another two hours on a sunny day in Flagstaff. Buckets of baseballs rest calmly near home plate, the mountains looming behind the outfield fence at Eagle Field. Assistant baseball coach Ed Vesely is ready to go, giving swing tips and putting in extra work with the players.
Vesely, 74 years young, has been a key mind in the Flagstaff baseball community since the 1990s. His career with the Flagstaff Police Department began in 1973, and he retired from full-time duty in 2006 to become the resource officer at Coconino High School from 2006 to 2014.
