1926: Cooperating with John Weatherford, builder of the San Francisco Boulevard, the Chamber of Commerce will officially sponsor the opening of this superb highway to the 11,300-foot level on August 14. Letters are being sent out by the Chamber to all such organizations in the state inviting them to be present at this opening and suggesting that they organize a caravan for the event. The arrangements for this event are in charge of the convention committee and motor division of the Chamber of Commerce, headed by Dr. A.J. Mackey. It has been suggested that a picnic lunch be served at the highest point on this road at noon Sunday, parking space for cars being available at this point. According to Mr. Weatherford, the road will be thrown open and free to the general public on this day and a general invitation is extended to the whole state to take part in this celebration. If weather conditions permit, the entire highway to the summit will be completed this fall, but will not be officially opened until next summer.
