Early Wednesday morning, the Rainier Valley neighborhood of Seattle was lit up in a way that had nothing to do with the rising sun. A construction site caught fire around 4:30 a.m., prompting a rapid evacuation of nearby residents. It’s not every day you wake up to an unplanned evacuation—thank goodness the firefighters were there to bring the blaze under control before it turned into a full-blown disaster!
With flames leaping high and power lines down, Seattle Fire Department crews had their work cut out for them. The lack of installed fire suppression systems at the construction site made for an explosive (literally!) combination of wood, debris, and high heat. When David Cuerpo, the fire department’s Public Information Officer, talks about “a lot of fuel,” you’ve got to wonder how many late-night construction workers are secretly fire enthusiasts!
Fortunately, the firefighters managed to extinguish the fire by 5 a.m. without any injuries reported—a true testament to their quick response. And while the construction site may be a smoldering wreck now, it certainly provided an unexpected thrill to residents who probably just wanted a quiet Wednesday morning.
