In a world where letting kids run free is becoming a scandalous affair, Emily Fields, a mother from Virginia, found herself on the wrong side of Child Protective Services—four times! Yes, you read that right. Emily simply wanted to allow her kids the kind of outdoor freedom many of us enjoyed in our own childhoods. Instead, she faced scrutiny from neighbors and authorities who thought letting the kids play outside was an invitation for disaster.
The saga began back in 2018 when a concerned neighbor decided that Emily’s toddlers were a danger to themselves while playing in their own backyard. At that point, she didn’t know this would lead to multiple visits from child protective services, resulting in formal investigations. Each incident boiled down to the fact that her kids were…gasp…playing unsupervised—which is apparently considered a crime in some rural corners of America. Even when it was clear Emily’s home was clean and her kids were thriving, the authorities were more interested in enforcing their own rules of supervision.
Emily decided enough was enough. Joining forces with the organization Let Grow, she sought to change the narrative around kids needing freedom to learn and explore their surroundings. To prove just how silly this whole situation has become, she even made her kids “licenses” to play outside. Yes, you heard me. A licensing system for backyard play—what does that even mean? If your kid needs a permit to hop on their bike, we might just be taking things a bit too far.
If you had to choose, would you let your kids be kids or shield them from every possible risk? Emily’s story reminds us that it’s time we rethink what it means to foster childhood independence. After all, how will our kids learn to navigate the world if we refuse to let them step outside to experience it?
