It’s a tale of bravery and tragedy as we reflect on the life of David Easterly, a retired King County detective who met an untimely end during a boating accident in Montana. Just a year prior, he had survived a life-threatening experience while on duty, where he was shot twice while serving an eviction notice. After a grueling recovery that shocked doctors, Easterly traded his badge for a peaceful retirement in Mill Creek. But this weekend, a relaxing outing turned fatal as he jumped from a boat on Flathead Lake and didn’t resurface.
His body was recovered two days later, prompting an outpouring of condolences from the King County Sheriff’s Office and the community. Easterly’s courageous journey is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who protect us, but it also comes with a heart-wrenching twist that leaves us all asking: how do we come to terms with such irony? The way fate works can make you feel like you’re in a movie scripted by the universe itself, only this is definitely not a happy ending.
In moments like this, it’s easy to get lost in thoughts about our own lives and the fragility of time. Do we appreciate the little things, love fiercely, and live boldly, or do we just sit back waiting for our next day off? On a lighter note, perhaps we should all take more moments for reflection—or at least consider taking that boat trip with life jackets equipped!
