In a move that’s sure to take the bait out of your fishing rod, Washington is set to increase hunting and fishing license fees starting July 1, marking the first hike in over a decade. With fees rising by about 38%, that budget for your outdoor adventures might be feeling a little more strained. The combination fishing license will now cost $62.79—a jump from $45.50—while big game licenses will soar to $117.30, a hefty increase from $85 for residents. And don’t get too comfortable—nonresidents can expect a wallet-popping fee of just over $1,000 for a big game license!
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife is pushing these increases to cover rising operational costs. Economists predict this change could bring in around $19.6 million next year, although they also expect an 11% drop in license sales. It seems the state’s plan to reel in cash might leave enthusiasts floundering. And while there are senior discounts for those 70 and older, many will still have to weigh whether their love for the outdoors is worth the extra bucks.
With the increase in fees, it’s natural to wonder how this will affect your plans for a weekend in the wild. Are we looking at a future where only those with deep pockets can hit the trails and streams? How do you think these new prices will change your outdoor adventures? Let’s hear your thoughts!
