In a recent congressional hearing, the drama unfolded like a reality TV show as one witness used the microphone to air some serious grievances about Democratic rhetoric and its consequences. The crux of the testimony laid bare calls for violence against law enforcement and cited an alarming 830% increase in assaults on ICE agents. As if that wasn’t enough to keep the audience clutching their popcorn, Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) couldn’t handle the heat and attempted to shut it down with a vote. Spoiler: it didn’t work!
The seven-hour hearing turned into a battle of procedural stunts and accusations, proving that Congress can offer a more exciting spectacle than most prime-time dramas. Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) found time to jump into the chatter with his own brand of sensationalism, labeling ICE as “terrorizing” immigrants—talk about a miscalculated compliment! It’s clear that Democrats were determined to stall the conversation rather than engage in meaningful dialogue, leaving it uncertain who, if anyone, came out on top.
So, what does it all mean for lawmakers’ ability to discuss real issues without losing their cool? Maybe it’s time for a few communication workshops in Washington. After all, what would we do without a little political theater to keep us entertained? Why can’t Congress take a page out of the “how to properly debate” playbook? One can dream!
