Human trafficking is one of those heartbreaking issues that somehow feels both distant and frighteningly close. The reality is, while the number of trafficking cases is rising, federal prosecutions have taken a nosedive, hitting just 148 over the last five years! Jaco Booyens, an activist and founder of Jaco Booyens Ministries, is sounding the alarm, claiming that the Justice Department looks like a dog trying to catch its own tail. It’s about time someone grabbed the leash!
Booyens wants to tackle this mess head-on by proposing specialized human trafficking courts filled with trained judges who, you know, actually understand what trafficking is. His idea is like giving the judiciary a dose of common sense, which is sadly lacking. Imagine judges who know the difference between a trafficking charge and a speeding ticket—what a novel thought! If we don’t start differentiating serious crimes, we might as well just start handing out participation trophies to traffickers!
With tens of thousands of people trafficked in the U.S. each year, it’s clear that we’re dropping the ball. It’s almost ironic that while most felonies have a 92% prosecution rate, that number plummets when it comes to human trafficking. Is just waiting for someone to go “Eureka!” really the best course of action here? It’s time for a wake-up call, folks!
So, what do you think? Are specialized courts the answer to tackling human trafficking, or is it just another bureaucratic band-aid? Let’s hash it out below!
