You wouldn’t think a copper smelter could be a hero in the battle against climate change, but look who’s making a cozy splash in Hamburg! Aurubis, the city’s copper producer, is cleverly using the waste heat generated during smelting to warm water for about 28,000 homes. That’s right—no extra emissions, just pure, unburnt heato! They’re saving an impressive 120,000 tons of CO2 each year, proving that sometimes, waste can really be a source of comfort.
This innovative project kicked off back in 2018, as part of a major redevelopment in the Hafencity area. By linking up with Enercity Contracting, they created a pipeline network that channels heat directly into the city’s district heating system. It’s like giving your leftovers a new life—except instead of wrapping them in foil, they’re sending hot water to warm your toes. And all that for a modest €70 million? Talk about a hot deal!
Just imagine the possibilities—turning industrial waste into a warm hug for families during winter. With these kinds of solutions, who needs fireside stories when cities can swap out their heating methods for something far more innovative? What’s your take? How can we use more of what we already have to keep our cities warm and cozy without warming the planet?
