My thanks to the Flagstaff City Council for removing the name “Columbus” from city streets. I feel much safer now. Heaven forbid (my apologies for a religious reference) that we feel in danger, challenged, hurt or unsafe — especially by a name or idea. That’s just plain un-American.
Any why not randomly, arbitrarily change the names of perhaps half the streets and institutions in town? After all, aren’t they almost all named after men? And if females are roughly half our population, shouldn’t half of everything be named after them? Shouldn’t females be hurt and offended otherwise?
