A recently published study conducted by astronomers at Lowell Observatory used machine learning to assist in creating a new classification system for meteors.
“Meteors have been observed for centuries, but only recently have we had datasets large and detailed enough to apply modern machine-learning methods,” said the study’s lead author, Sam Hemmelgarn in the observatory’s announcement of the study. “This allows us to extract physical information that was previously hidden in the data.”
