Flagstaff History: Wild dog or wolf attacked tourists along Route 66

1926: The Western Navajo agency, Tuba Trading Post Co., and Shekinah Ranch will cooperate in making the road from Tuba City to Hoteville via Coal Canyon available for the eastward travel for visitors to the snake dance. They will station teams on the two sandhills near Coal Canyon on August 20 and 21 to assist all cars free of charge. Coal Canyon is one of the most beautiful and least known of the many lovely canyons in this region, and this road, which after leaving Tuba City, takes one through the interesting Hopi pueblo of Moenkopi, and the fertile fields and gardens in the Moenkopi Valley ascends by various levels to the Mesa south of Tuba mesa, until one reaches this exquisite canyon, 15 miles from Tuba. Thirty-five miles beyond this lies Hoteville, a picturesque pueblo perched at the edge of the Oraibi mesa, high above the desert.
