A scene straight out of an action movie played out at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport when 20-year-old John Nino decided he was done with his prison sentence. While under the watchful eye of two Department of Corrections officers, he made a break for it—right through the airport! Nino was en route back to Washington from New Mexico after failing to report to his community corrections officer. I mean, talk about giving new meaning to “breakfast on the run”!
Nino, standing at six feet two inches and weighing around 154 pounds, is described as wearing a red coat, grey sweatpants, and sporting a tattoo over his left eyebrow—definitely not the best disguise if he thought he could blend in. The authorities rushed to search for him, with the Port of Seattle police joining in the frantic manhunt. Unfortunately for them, Nino was as slippery as a bar of soap, disappearing into the streets of Seattle.
This escape raises questions about airport security and how someone can simply bolt, especially with officers nearby. If a young guy can escape during such a high-profile transit, how secure do we feel flying in and out of these airports? Can airports double as escape rooms? Would you even think to pull a stunt like that? And why do they feel more like cheese than a fortress? Let’s chat in the comments!
