The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) sued the state of Arizona in federal court on Thursday, July 9, seeking to block the implementation of the state’s controversial Proposition 314.
One of the provisions of the ballot measure, which was approved by the state’s voters in 2024, would make crossing the U.S.-Mexico border outside of a port of entry a state-level crime, and make state and local law enforcement officials responsible for arresting undocumented immigrants. (Crossing the border outside a port of entry is already a federal crime.)
