Playing catch-up for nearly all of the game, the No. 10 Coconino Panthers (15-6) shifted to the elimination side of the 4A Conference state bracket with a 7-2 loss to the No. 2-seeded Mica Mountain Thunderbolts (17-2).
Sent four hours south for Tuesday’s second-round playoff matchup, the Panthers fell behind 3-0 after the first inning. The Thunderbolts extended the lead to 5-0 with one run in each of the second and third innings, and finished their scoring with two more runs in the fourth.
