Kick off the winter season with the Flagstaff Ski Club as they present Warren Miller’s 63rd annual extreme snow riding film, “Flow State,” at the Orpheum Theater Saturday at 4 and 8 p.m.
Produced by Warren Miller Entertainment, a press release describes “Flow State” as “a place of such singular focus and connection with the environment that, in this place, the faster you ride, the slower time passes. The Flow State exists anywhere crisp winter air shocks your lungs and sunlight refracts off snowflakes, allowing you to emerge from this state improved — happier, more confident and more aware of your surroundings.”
Hosted by Jonny Moseley and showcasing athletes including Colby West, Chris Davenport, Jess McMillan, David Wise, Ted Ligety, Julian Carr and Jackie Paaso, “Flow State” takes viewers to peaks in Norway, Austria, California, Switzerland, Alaska, Telluride, Japan and beyond.
Tickets are $8, $5 for age 12 and younger, and are available Saturday only. All those who attend will receive a $35 coupon for a day of midweek/non-holiday skiing at the Arizona Snowbowl (a savings of $20) as well as a free issue of Skiing Magazine. Doors will open for the shows one half hour before the show begins.
Proceeds will benefit the Flagstaff Alpine Ski and Snowboard Team, a nonprofit organization supporting the sport of skiing and snowboarding for youth ages 6-18.

Free diabetes and heart screenings in December
Northern Arizona residents now have access to free diabetes and heart screenings through the Northern Arizona Diabetes – Heart Connection program funded by a grant from the AstraZeneca HealthCare Foundation. Services include identifying persons at risk for pre-diabetes using the American Diabetes Association questionnaire; assessing for diabetes and cardiovascular disease risk through a cholesterol and blood sugar screening; and providing an introductory visit with a health educator, diabetes educator or a dietitian to discuss risk factors and what people can do to improve their health.
The free screenings are scheduled throughout the month of December in four locations in Flagstaff. No appointment is necessary. For more information, call 773-2493.
