1926: Two hundred nineteen slogans were submitted to Flagstaff Chamber of Commerce in the recent slogan contest, all of which gave evidence to the fact that considerable thought and preparation had been spent on them. In considering these proposed slogans, the judges took into consideration the slogans that had the most to tell, or in other words, had something to sell. Miss Mary Costigan was chairman of the judges, assisted by Mayor I. B. Koch and Fred S. Breen. The slogan that was adopted for Flagstaff was as follows: “Flagstaff — Where Winter Plays with Summer,” written by Miss Anna Mae Earnest of Flagstaff Teachers College. The second prize was awarded to Miss Josephine Matthews of this city for the following slogan: “Flagstaff — Scenic Center of Sun and Snow.” The Chamber of Commerce urges every firm and individual in the city to make use of this first slogan in all their publicity, as well as in personal letters. A little later it is hoped to have stickers, bearing this slogan, which can be used on your letters.
